A recent press article said:

“Discrimination comes in many forms” said Kathy Smith Chief Executive of Cross Street Law Centre.

“One widely reported case recently compelled a bank to install facilities for a wheelchair user who didn’t want to take the option of banking from home, he wanted to use the bank itself but their steps prohibited this.

People are refused entry to shops and other premises because they are disabled or refused insurance because they are too old.

Being pregnant is never given as the reason for dismissal, employers know not to, they know it’s wrong so give some other made-up reason.

Discrimination in Employment is still happening. One issue we have dealt with is women being dismissed when they get pregnant. People should not think that Discrimination is only about ‘race’ matters. Discrimination on the grounds of, disability, sex, race and age is illegal”.

As the lead worker on Employment issues Patrick McNamee said:

“It never ceases to amaze me that after so many years of these acts being law that employers still dismiss women because they are pregnant. Being pregnant is never given as the reason for dismissal, employers know not to, they know it’s wrong so give some other made-up reason. In the main it costs less time and money to comply with the law rather than have to deal with an Employment Tribunal case.”

Patrick has helped people take a number of cases to the Employment Tribunal.
